Most cities do fireworks. St. Louis does them at the Gateway Arch, on the Mississippi River, on the night America turns 250. That’s a different situation.

Here’s what to expect.

Celebrate Saint Louis at the Gateway Arch

The main event is Celebrate Saint Louis — a free two-day festival at the Gateway Arch National Park on July 3 and July 4. No tickets, no registration. You show up.

Gates open at 4:00 PM Friday and 2:00 PM Saturday. Both nights run until 11:00 PM. Fireworks go off at approximately 9:40 PM each night over the river, with a 1,500-drone aerial display alongside them.

Friday: Zedd, Ludacris, and Big Wild. Saturday: Miranda Lambert, Kenny Loggins, and Stephen Marley. Free.

There’s also an Innovation Village on the grounds — St. Louis advances in space, aviation, biotech, and conservation. Worth a stop if you’re there early.

Celebrate Saint Louis Festival / Fireworks 10 minutes from Gothic Heights Inn

Free two-day festival at the Gateway Arch on July 3 and 4. Gates open 4pm (July 3) and 2pm (July 4). Fireworks and drone show at approx. 9:40pm both nights. No tickets required. Concerts both nights — Zedd and Ludacris (July 3), Miranda Lambert and Kenny Loggins (July 4).

Getting There

Take MetroLink. The Arch is on the Red Line — Laclede’s Landing or Convention Center stops. After fireworks the trains are packed, but they’re running. Rideshares after the show are brutal — 3x to 5x surge and 30-minute waits are normal. If you’re driving, downtown garages fill by 7:00 PM.

The Parade

The 143rd America’s Birthday Parade steps off Saturday, July 4 at 4:00 PM from Market and 14th, heading east to Market and Broadway. Community groups, veterans organizations, school bands. If you’re already downtown for the festival, the route runs straight toward the Arch grounds.

Forest Park on the Fourth

The St. Louis Symphony plays a free outdoor concert on Art Hill on the Fourth, ending with fireworks from the base of the hill. Blankets on the slope, families everywhere, no elbow-fighting for position.

Arrive by 6:00 PM for a good spot. Bring food — lines inside the park are long by showtime.

Art Hill, Forest Park Fireworks / Concert 1.5 miles from Gothic Heights Inn

Free St. Louis Symphony concert and fireworks from the base of Art Hill on July 4. Arrive by 6pm for a good spot on the lawn. Blanket and snacks recommended. More relaxed than the riverfront.

For a full picture of what’s in Forest Park, read our Forest Park Complete Visitor’s Guide.

Daytime on the Fourth

The Arch and museum. The underground museum is strong. The tram ride to the top is unlike anything else in the city. Book tram tickets ahead — they sell out on the holiday weekend.

The Saint Louis Zoo. Free. 18,700 animals. Go early. Full breakdown in our Forest Park guide.

The Hill. Half a mile from us. St. Louis’s Italian neighborhood. The restaurants on Marconi and Daggett are some of our favorites in the city. A long lunch there before heading downtown is a very good use of an afternoon.

Watch the Fireworks from the Rooftop

Gothic Heights Inn is a converted Gothic church in the Clifton Heights neighborhood. The original bell tower puts you above the rooftops with a 360-degree view of the city.

On the Fourth, you can watch the Arch fireworks from the hot tub without touching a parking garage or a crowd. Fireworks go off across the whole metro at once — the Arch, Forest Park, suburbs to the west. Jesse and I watch from up there every year. It’s our favorite way to do the Fourth.

All the details are on our 4th of July at Gothic Heights Inn page.

Staying for the Weekend

One night covers the fireworks. Two gets you both concert nights, the parade, and the daytime Arch. The holiday weekend fills up fast.

Top 5 Most Unique Places to Stay in St. Louis

Every city has a Marriott and Hilton. St. Louis has a former train depot with a 65-foot vaulted ceiling, a museum you sleep inside, a hotel built around British literature, and a Gothic church with a roof top hot tub on the bell tower.

Frequent Questions

The Inn is a church? Is everything super religious?

The Inn was originally a Methodist church. The congregation sold it to a private party in 2004 where it began the restoration and conversion from a church to an Inn. While the building has a rich history, it is now a secular space. The Inn is a place for all to enjoy, regardless of religious beliefs. We welcome everyone!

Is my room private?

Yes! Each room has it's own entrance with a lock and door code that is only for you. Your en-suite bathroom is attached to your room and is only for your use. Like a hotel, there is a main entrance to the Inn and common areas like the kitchen, garden, library, lounges and social spaces.

Is everything old and creepy?

Absolutely not! While the building may have historical roots, it has undergone a thoughtful refurbishment, blending modern conveniences with its unique charm and beauty. The Inn is a warm, inviting space with comfortable furnishings and luxury amenities. The building is well-lit and secure, and the neighborhood is safe and walkable.

Why is it named Gothic Heights?

We wanted to honor the unique Gothic architecture of the building and highlight the "heights" of the space including the tall ceilings, arched doorways and roof-top hot tub. Additionally we're located in the Clifton Heights neighborhood.

Are there shared spaces?

The main sanctuary area boasts a spacious shared kitchen, a dining area, multiple cozy sitting and reading spaces, and designated TV areas. Additionally, guests can unwind at the large bar for morning coffee or evening happy hour, enjoy a board game or chess in the lounge, and relax in the outdoor garden. For those seeking ultimate relaxation, there's also an outdoor patio and a rooftop hot tub, ensuring every guest finds their perfect spot to unwind and enjoy their stay.

Does someone live on-site?

Yes! The inn is our home, and we live on the lower level (below ground) of the property with our twin boys and our 2 dogs. We are available to assist you with anything you need during your stay, but we also respect your privacy and space so you may not even see or hear us for your entire stay. We are available via text or phone if you need anything.

Do all rooms have access the Rooftop Hot Tub?

Yes! The Rooftop is available to all guests. You can catch a beautiful sunset or 360 views of the city including the Gateway Arch. It's even better at night. The hot tub is open from 3pm to 11pm daily. The rooftop is a great place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the city.

Can I rent the entire Inn?

We have a special rate to rent the entire space. If you rent the entire Inn a 5th bedroom is available, bringing the total number of sleeping arrangements to 10.
Contact us at (314) 900-7110 or Stay@GothicHeightsInn.com for details.

When is Check-in and Check-out?

Check-in is at 3pm and check-out is at 11am. Late check-out may be available for an additional fee.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask that as a small 4 bedroom Inn, you understand our need for ample notice of cancellation. For our Standard Rate, you have 24 hours after booking for a full refund. If you would like the ability to cancel before check-in, purchase the Flexible Rate (Refundable) and you can cancel up to 24 hours before check-in time.
